It is obvious from the first frame that a tremendous amount of work went into this film, even by the high standards of feature animation. Can you discuss the seven year process?
Tomm Moore: The story development went hand in hand with the art development.
What was it about the riverboat casinos in Iowa that compelled you to write this story?
It was really interesting to see the anti-glamorous version of a casino. There was a story in there somewhere that we hadn’t seen on film before.
Can you talk about finding this character, before you brought him to the page?
Paul Schrader: These kinds of stories — I’ve done about a half-dozen of them, stretching all the way back to *Taxi Driver* — usually come about when there’s a metaphor.
What was it like, collaborating with director Christian Petzold for a third time?
Paula Beer: Well, working with Christian is just fun. And his way of working is different from everything I’ve experienced so far.
Can you talk about playing someone who is emotionally disconnected or doesn’t show emotion?
Casey Affleck: I don’t often think myself about how much emotion I’m showing in real life.
Eliza, when did you first start to think about making this remarkable film?
Eliza Hittman: I first began thinking about this film in 2012. I read a newspaper article that was all about the death of Savita Halappanavar, this woman in Ireland who died after being denied a life-saving abortion.
